about

Recorded in December 2019 at Soleils Bleus HQ, Lucy Miller and the Dog Roses' self-titled first album began with a selection of Lucy’s poems and songs for guitar and voice, which were then fleshed out collectively with Stéphane Clor (cello, effects, objects, voice), Léonie Risjeterre (bodhràn, prepared guitar, objects, voice) and Zoe Heselton (electric guitar, voice, harmonica) under the name The Dog Roses.

Whilst some arrangements made attempts to fit the original song formats closely and highlight and strengthen what was already present in them (Lion’s Heart, Dark Blue Charcoal, It Could Have Been Very Beautiful), some departed from them, interfering with them in order to challenge them and change them into something more fragile and complex (Johnny’s By The Water). For the poems, a more improvisational method was adopted, shaping textures and soundscapes in which Lucy’s fragmented poems could appear and disappear, whispered into the microphone (Moon Poem, Intro), or allowing for surprises to occur, such as Lucy’s singing of a Wordsworth poem to the beat of the bodhràn (Ode To Childhood).
