Songs are thoughts, sung out with the breath when people are moved by great forces & ordinary speech no longer suffices. We are moved just like the ice floe sailing here and there in the current. Our thoughts are driven by a flowing force when we feel joy, when we feel fear, when we feel sorrow. Thoughts can wash over us like a flood, making our breath come in gasps and our heart throb. Something like an abatement in the weather will keep us thawed up. And then it will happen that we, who always think we are small, will feel still smaller. And we will fear to use words. But it will happen that the words we need will come of themselves. When the words we want to use shoot up of themselves—we get a new song.

Les chansons sont des pensées, exprimées par le souffle lorsque des forces puissantes traversent les individus et que la parole ordinaire ne suffit plus à les traduire. Nous sommes alors entraîné•es, tel des blocs de glace dérivant au fil du courant. Nos pensées obéissent au flux d'une force— qu'on éprouve joie, crainte ou tristesse. Nos pensées peuvent nous submerger comme un déluge inattendu., nous coupant le souffle et nous faisant battre le coeur. Un phénomène semblable à une altération du climat le maintiendra dans cet état de dégel. Et il peut arriver que nous qui nous sentons si petit•e•s, éprouvions plus encore notre petitesse. Mais il peut arriver que les mots dont nous avons besoin sortent d'eux-mêmes. Et quand les mots dont nous vouons nous servir viennent ainsi de leur propre chef— nous avons un nouveau chant.
